ECOSA advise listed property owners

16 February 2015

In amongst practising stonemasons, architects drawings and fire-place exhibits, ECOSA were at the Listed Property Show held at Olympia this weekend to discuss the various ecological challenges surrounding historic buildings.

There were many interesting discussions on our stand, not surprisingly, largely about bats. Our team were able to offer advice on planning for the short season for bat surveys to avoid the risk of delays in securing planning permission; as well as the potential to integrate bat roost compensation features discreetly within an existing or improved building. In addition, it was an opportunity for us to hear about the more general challenges of being the owner of a listed building, for example the obligation to remedy inappropriate changes made by previous owners. The team were happy to report though that the vast majority of home owners, architects and planning consultants they spoke to were positive about bats as authentic features of historic buildings. Bats do after all have terribly good taste in buildings!

On our stand, we challenged visitors with a small competition about UK wildlife based on three bell-jar exhibits: a badger skull, a snowdrop and a death's-head hawkmoth. The winner and the answers will be published next week on this website.
