Dramatic decline in water vole numbers

09 September 2013

The Environment Agency has reported that surveys of water voles across the country have shown a decline of over 20% since 2011.

The decline is attributed in large part to loss of habitat and predation by American mink. Lower water levels through the droughts of 2012 exacerbated these effects by exposing burrows to predators.

We are fortunate that Hampshire, largely due to some excellent habitat restoration by the Wildlife Trusts and others, is an identified stronghold for the species with water voles a regular sight along the waterways here in Winchester.

ECOSA regularly conduct surveys for water vole and have been involved in a number of projects where water vole habitat has been amplified or created for example the new water vole banks at Timsbury Lake.
